Out in the clubs, he heard 'Car Freaks,' the first single by a local Houston rap group called the Ghetto Boys. He moved here in 1987 and threw himself into the city's nightlife. Though Leysath died in his New Jersey home, and originally hailed from the Garden State, the DJ made an enduring mark on the Third Coast.

Jordan cited 'Mind of a Lunatic,' as just one example of a song that took on a different tone when Red added a sample from the old 'Spider-Man' TV show.

In his autobiography, Brad Jordan, the Geto Boys rapper known as Scarface, said the DJ 'really helped mold the early Rap-A-Lot sound,' his ears always open for the right sample to make a good song great. But Red had this marriage of hip-hop to movies and television well before the mainstream started accepting hip-hop. If you listen now, all these industries cross-promote into hip-hop.

'He was into all that stuff,' Dennis said. Friends and admirers describe a DJ and producer whose affinity for comic books, kung-fu movies, sound effects and TV themes found its way into his music, an approach to building music that was years ahead of its time.
